Gold Cross Pharmacy is one of the oldest pharmacies in Sydney and has been trading since the 1870’s. The pharmacy is located on the main street of Redfern and is committed to providing quality healthcare to the community since it’s foundation. Owner Mualla Akinci is a pharmacist with over thirty years experience in pharmacy and medicine. For decades, Mualla and her team of pharmacists, technicians and assistants have supported the public with high quality information, appropriate products and the right health advice. The team at Gold Cross Pharmacy believe that better information leads to better health, which is why we are here for you during times of illness and good health.

Our professional and friendly team will assist you with answering all your health related enquiries. We cater for all your general pharmacy needs including dispensing prescriptions, assisting with over the counter medication, including cold and flu, pain relief, first-aid, vitamins, cosmetics, skin care, hair care and other unique products — such as those addressing tick borne diseases. Our wide range of services are customised to meet your needs and include offering personalised advice and care, complimentary home delivery, weekly dose administration aids, vaccinations, home medication reviews (HMRs), medication checks, compounding medications, blood pressure checks, asthma screenings, and the hiring of medical equipment. As a late night pharmacy, we also extend quality healthcare and pharmacy services to those requiring after hours assistance. We are open 7 days a week during the hours of Monday-Friday 8am-9pm, Saturday 9am-9pm and Sunday & Public Holidays 9am-7pm (closed Christmas Day).


Dr Mualla McManus

Dr Mualla McManus is the proprietor of Redfern’s Gold Cross Pharmacy. She is a pharmacist and medical research scientist with over thirty years medical experience, practicing primarily in Sydney’s inner city suburb of Redfern. Dr McManus has a strong research background in immunology (Monash University), neurosciences (The University of Sydney), and cancer biology (Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre). She was a Post-doctoral Fellow at The Garvan Institute of Medical Research, and has held various lecturing positions at The University of Sydney throughout her career. Dr McManus is also the Founding Director of The Karl McManus Foundation and The Karl McManus Institute, two non-profit organisations through which she is currently researching tick borne infections in Australia.

Dr McManus is also the Director of the soon to be opened About Redfern Medical Centre, a general practice located next door to Gold Cross Pharmacy — due for completion in July 2019. About Redfern Medical Centre’s primary purpose will be to provide a selection of health-related services for the local Redfern community, including health checks, skin cancer checks, integrative medicine, women’s health, men’s health, sexual health, mental health, vaccinations, paediatrics, pathology and more.

The Karl McManus Foundation was set up in memory of Karl McManus, who sadly passed away from complications with tick borne diseases (Lyme Disease). The aim of the KMF is to erode the barriers to the recognition and treatment of borreliosis in Australia, and to contribute to world knowledge about borreliosis and other tick-borne infections.


The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Association is an American non-profit advocacy group which advocates for greater acceptance of the controversial and unrecognised chronic Lyme disease. ILADS is an international, multi-disciplinary medical society, dedicated to the diagnosis and appropriate treatment of Lyme and its associated diseases.


With over 25 years of experience IGeneX offers testing for Lyme Disease, Relapsing Fever and other Tick-Borne illnesses. The mission of IGeneX is to aid patients and practitioners in the diagnosis of tick-borne illnesses by providing the most comprehensive testing possible.

The International Society for Infectious Diseases, established in 1986, is a non-profit organisation that works to control infectious disease outbreaks and improve the care of patients afflicted with these conditions. Through training and educational opportunities for healthcare professionals, the ISID works to overcome these obstacles to improve global health.


ArminLabs performs laboratory tests for chronic infections originating from tick-borne diseases. The facility specialises in T-cellular tests (EliSpot), B-cellular tests (IgA, IgM and IgG-antibodies), and NK cell tests (CD57, CD56) for several bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections.
